Definitely call him, and cry if you need to. Could the two of them do with a certified nursing assistant and a visiting nurse? That usually costs less than 24/7 nursing care. And I hate making healthcare decisions based on cost, too. Also, is he a veteran? The VA was wonderfully helpful in dealing with my mother. Feel free to ask me for more details if you’d like.

Call him. It’s okay if you don’t know what to say, and it’s okay if you cry. Just let him know you love him and that you’re thinking about him. Tell him a stupid story.

Call him. I’m sure he’d love to hear your voice, and crying because he’s failing is nothing to be ashamed of. It means you love him, and I’m sure he’d like to be reminded of that.

They’ve already had a visiting nurse-type thing, and it wasn’t enough. His health is bad enough that he needs round-the-clock care, and my Grandma isn’t strong enough.

I’m so sorry! It’s so hard, watching people you love go through these horrible times.

So is there any chance they can get a visiting nurse instead of 24/7 care? Is there anything worse than having to make life decisions solely based on cost?

Anyway, call them. And hang in there…

I’m so sorry, ME. But know this, even if you do cry, I believe that a call to your grandpa would do you both a world of good. Sometimes you just have to cry together when the situation gets the better of us all.

Sounds like a very tough time for you … I saw the pictures of your grampa from the previous post, and he looked like he was enjoying life and the we one …
it isn’t cold to wish for him to have what he would wish for himself: a calm, painless, quick transition from this world into whatever’s next, least traumatic for the family and himself …
Take care of yourself, communicate with others of your family and friends who are hurting because of this, and don’t feel bad about wanting things that are not, in fact, selfish. Time enough to say goodbye is all we need, and no one is ever ready to let go of someone, even when that person may be ready to go.
